Woolwich Beyond the Elizabeth Line: What Is There to Do?

The Elizabeth line put Woolwich on more London property searches, but there is plenty to do without getting on a train. The Thames, Woolwich Works, cafés, restaurants and green spaces are all nearby, with Greenwich and The O2 also easy to reach.

Woolwich Beyond the Elizabeth Line: What Is There to Do?

Woolwich is now much easier to reach from central London thanks to the Elizabeth line.

But what is actually here once you leave the station?

Start with the Thames. Add Woolwich Works, cafés, restaurants, riverside paths and easy trips to Greenwich, Blackheath and The O2.

There is enough locally to spend a full weekend without heading into central London.

Walk along the Thames

The Thames runs directly past Royal Arsenal.

More than 1km of riverside paths run through Royal Arsenal Riverside, with open views across the river and towards Canary Wharf.

You can follow the Thames Path through Woolwich or continue towards the Thames Barrier.

It is an easy option for a morning walk, run or cycle without leaving the area.

The on-site pier also gives Woolwich another way onto the river, with Uber Boat by Thames Clippers services available from Royal Arsenal.

See what is on at Woolwich Works

Woolwich Works sits inside the Royal Arsenal.

The venue opened in 2021 after several former military buildings were restored and now hosts live music, comedy, theatre and other events.

That puts a major London arts venue within walking distance rather than requiring a trip into the West End.

Check the programme before the weekend and you may have a gig, show or comedy night within the neighbourhood.

Food and coffee are already on site

Royal Arsenal has developed its own mix of shops, cafés, restaurants and everyday services.

Berkeley describes the area as having an established retail hub with supermarkets, restaurants and other essentials.

That is useful during the week as much as at weekends.

Coffee, groceries or dinner do not need to start with a train or bus journey.

Woolwich town centre is also close by when you need more choice.

Greenwich is easy for a day out

Greenwich gives you plenty to do when you want to go a little further.

Greenwich Market, the Cutty Sark, National Maritime Museum, Old Royal Naval College and Royal Observatory are all in the area.

You can easily spend a day around the market, park and river without travelling into central London first.

The O2 and Greenwich Peninsula are another option for concerts, restaurants, cinema and the London Cable Car.

Head to Oxleas Wood when you want more space

Woolwich is not only about the river.

Oxleas Wood sits south of Woolwich and gives you woodland and open space away from the main streets.

Severndroog Castle is also inside the wider Oxleas Wood area. Visit Greenwich lists it among the main places to visit near Woolwich.

It works well when you want a longer walk without leaving South East London.

The Elizabeth line still changes where you can go

The Elizabeth line is useful because Woolwich is not at the end of your options.

Royal Arsenal Riverside has its own Elizabeth line station. Berkeley currently lists Bond Street at 23 minutes from Woolwich.

National Rail and DLR stations are also around 300 metres away, while the Thames Clipper pier is on site.

That gives you several ways to move around London depending on where you are going.

London City Airport is nearby

London City Airport is another practical connection.

Berkeley lists the journey from Royal Arsenal Riverside to London City Airport at around seven minutes via the DLR.

That can be useful for European business trips and short-haul travel.

It is one of the less obvious Woolwich connections when people only look at the Elizabeth line.
